I needed a family lawyer because my ex-husband had not changed the amount he had been paying in child support for ten years, so I was going to request an increase and back payment. It was stressful because my ex wasn't someone that I could deal with without a lawyer. It wouldn't be a mediation situation, and I knew that because of previous experience.
A friend of mine, a social worker in our city, had heard about the firm's owner, Brenda Barr, as empowering and fair to women. So that's why I consulted with her initially, and I found that consultation to be very helpful and very fair. I explained my case to her. I was clear that I was limited financially, but I knew that my ex would be difficult to deal with and that I needed legal intervention and representation. I asked if her firm would take it on, and she was very fair, realistic, and reasonable in assessing what I needed. So she recommended that instead of using her, I use a lawyer that would cost a bit less. And that's how I ended up with my lawyer.
What stood out most during my consult was speaking about my rights and validating that I had a case. Brenda explained that, as the head lawyer, it would be very expensive, and she didn't think that was necessary unless things became very difficult. So that was a very fair analysis. She could have taken it on and charged her full cost, but she didn't feel the need to do that, so it was good.
After signing the retainer agreement, I felt hopeful because things were finally getting dealt with and would move forward. I felt like I was well-represented, and I felt confident.
They were clear on what the law says, and they were able to take the information that I had, and they were able to say, this is what we'll use this for, and you absolutely have the right to this, and here's what we need from you to show this. So we worked very well together to pull everything together for the case.
Email communication was very helpful. When I had a question, I would send an email, and if it needed to be a consultation, they would set one up. But most often, my questions could be answered quickly through email. She was very responsive, very available, and flexible around meeting times. It was all virtual because of the pandemic, which worked well for me.
I found both my lawyer and Brenda very similar. They were very personable yet professional and kept appropriate boundaries. They were very compassionate and validating when I spoke to them. I had a lot of stress around this, and they were comforting and validating what I was experiencing. Yet, they also let me know my responsibilities in the situation, even if it may not have been what I wanted to hear. We could keep emotions out of things and stay focused on the task at hand, yet they validated the emotions I was going through then.
Honestly, it was worth every penny because I wasn't dealing with having to do the paperwork, although I dealt with digging and organizing all of my stuff to help them. Having her service was valuable. Don't hesitate to contact them because they will represent you well. You may pay a bit more, but it's worth it in the end. They're fair and reasonable and work toward the best outcome for their client, in a meaningful way, with clear communication and excellent responsiveness.
