When you get served with a motion, then obviously, you start to freak out a little bit.
I actually moved from Mississauga to London, but my case had started in Mississauga, Brampton, so I originally approached Brenda Barr to see if she would represent me there, but it was too far out of kind of jurisdiction, and her driving would just take too much time and probably cost a boatload.
So, I had a lawyer in Toronto who was not great at all. I ended up parting ways with them and represented myself for a bit to get the case moved to London. It was a family law case, and the kids and I were living in London, so it just didn't make sense to have it in Brampton anymore. I actually won that one and got it moved, and then as soon as I got it moved to London, then she was like, "Yeah, no problem, we'll help you."
Interviewer: When you first started the case, can you tell me what your state of mind was?
When it first started, I was still in Mississauga, obviously terrified. I've never been in front of a judge or dealing with lawyers on a personal level, ever, not even to fight a speeding ticket. So when you get served with a motion, then obviously, you start to freak out a little bit.
And just a little backstory, we were divorced for ten years, and it was fine, and we didn't go through any custody battle or anything like that. We just had an agreement. And then, when I decided to move, that's when everything went sideways because he didn't want us to move, but he wasn't involved with the kids, so I didn't think it was gonna be a problem, but it actually escalated and turned into a huge problem, which is what the lawsuit was about.
