We were in a situation where my son was living with his girlfriend, and they were actually fiance. And then, all of a sudden, she wanted different things, so it wasn't going to work out. She postponed the wedding, and then she said, "No, I don't think I want to get married." She was a nurse. She started pursuing the doctors at the hospital. So, a new nurse with a new job. My son had paid for everything for the few years while she was in school that they were together. And then, once she was making her own money, she wanted to do her own thing.

It was disappointing for sure, but we really thought they could just amicably split everything because they only owned the house together. So we thought, the equity is this in the house, just split everything. [Client] owned both cars, so we were offering to give her a car and then subtract that from half of the equity, and off you go. And they came back with a completely unreasonable number. Completely unreasonable. It was four times what we had offered.

[Client] was trying to get away with a little bit less than what we really thought she deserved because he had supported her for so long and paid for her education and all this stuff. So our calculation was probably about 25,000 and a car and they wanted 180,000. So we knew he had to get a lawyer. We knew there was no way they were going to realize that they were being ridiculous.

The problem was my son and his fiance were splitting up, and they owned a house together, and her parents thought she was entitled to an excessive amount of money, so we had to get a lawyer.
